What’s the difference between a 720p tv and a 1080p tv?

Question by Chance: What’s the difference between a 720p tv and a 1080p tv?
Hi, tomorrow morning (Black Friday) I am going out to get a deal on a nice tv. But in the ads in the newspaper and online, I notice that the 720p tv’s and the 1080p tv’s prices are significantly different. What are the differences between a 720p and 1080p tv? Thank you.

1080p is a higher resolution (more lines/pixels of data).

for reference, your old standard TV was probably 480p or 480i.

If you’ve ever been on youtube, you can see the difference on ANY HD video, as they allow you to watch in 360p, 480p, 720p, or 1080p:

If you see the ’360p’ near the full-screen button, you can check out the difference between 480 and 1080 in full-screen mode. Of course, on a large TV the difference is much more noticeable.

Keep in mind, if you plan on watching Blu-rays on your TV, 1080p is a must. Blu-rays are gorgeous in 1080p.

DVD (480p) vs Blu-ray (1080p) comparison:

  1. p at the end stands for progressive, and i for interlaced – the number is the number of lines of resolution, the more the better
an i TV with the same number of lines draws odd numbered, and then even numbered lines
a p TV draws them all during the same pass

a 720p TV is probably a discontinued close out item as most TVs now are 1080p. The other thing to look at is the refresh rate in Hz – 60 Hz is probably all a 720p TV will do, most 1080p TVs are 120Hz, and 3D TVs are usually 240 Hz —

    I think 3D TV is still a joke – so I’d recommend buying a 1080p, 120 Hz TV

there are several means of delivering the video – avoid plasma as it tends to burn in leaving ghosts, there are two types of LCD TVs, some are backlit with a high pressure light bulb, and many new ones are lit by while LEDs which shouldn’t burn out

Vizio TVs are junk – stick with the major brands like LG, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic…

  2. the main difference between 720p and 1080p
televisions is the number of pixels

720p has a resolution of 1024×768 or more
1080p has a resolution of 1920×1080 or more

so basically, the more pixels the better!

  3. the p in 1080p and 720p stands for pixelation wich means how many pixels are accumilated on the screen so there for 1080p has more so it produces a clear and more smooth picture than 720p
